Thought it about time to start this thread, how many are interested is another story? I guess we only ever mention it because of that event in 1974... that said personally I’ve always had an interest...
Favourite by a long way is Sweden; yet again, and they haven’t even had their own final to choose their representative, this year there’s a huge amount of hype as run away favourite is previous winner Loreen ( Euphoria) with her track Tattoo...
From what I’ve heard so far , 20 countries have chosen , UK not one of them, it’s not a great year... so far....

I tend to avoid listening to the entries until Eurovision week. The only one I've heard so far is the Irish entry. I've liked the band for a while and they've released some great singles. The entry is solid but not a winner.
Sweden is so reliable when it comes to quality entries. Their song last year was just beautiful.

I understand Loreena is favourite to be the Swedish entry...again!
Johnny Logan won twice (1980/87)
Cliff Richard lost twice (2nd/4h)
Vicky Leandros lost (1967/4h) and won 1973
Anyone won first time and lost subsequent time?
Or other multi appearances? Cheryl Baker lost 1978(12th) with Coco but won in 1981 with Bucks Fizz.

Linda Martin (Ireland) came second in 1984 and won in 1992. Both songs were written by Johnny Logan.

Over the years I’ve tried picking the winner, not my favourite, with pretty bad results..unless it was obvious..
At the moment it’s looking like Sweden and Loreen with Tattoo, I forced myself..lol, to listen to the whole track, and yes it’s very good and can understand the hype, the issue she has is that she hasn’t won the Swedish qualification yet surely a formality ?
With very few tracks to be confirmed, including the UK, can anyone beat her...
Tickets for the final sold out in 36 minutes yesterday and within hours the touts had them for sale for £9000.. disgusting... I believe, that has been stopped now, but more fool you if you bought them, ring side seat... TV I’m afraid. I’d love to go, but even at normal price of £380 is pushing it.. that’s nearly 4 times seeing Voyage...

Wow, £380 for normal price. That's a rip off. Live events are so expensive these days.

Just heard the UK entry and it's a banger. The Brits seem to have gotten their Eurovision mojo back.

^^^ Yes The UK has upped their game, it’s a top 10 finish, ( I doubt the UK would want to hold ESC again next year )

I've heard a snippet of the UK entry and it sounded quite catchy. A little Dua Lipa-ish.

Pretty impressive performance and staging! It's not a million miles from Euphoria, though. And there's something naggingly familiar about the tune too. It's bugging me that I can't name it right now, but it'll come to me!

Tatoo sounds very like Euphoria.
The line "And all I care about is you You're stuck on me like a tattoo"
Sounds like "the bullets, the bullets" from Harry Styles' song.
Sign of the Times - Harry Styles
Tattoo - Loreen

Go to the part where Agnetha sings "and that's what you've done too, nothing more to say, no more ace to play"

Yep! It sounds like a less catchy version of Euphoria. 11 years after winning Eurovision and having a huge hit around Europe - Loreen's second entry really is an attempt at "history repeating itself". But this time it will be without the success.

Mae Mullen enters UK Chart at #30. Very umimpressive imo.
It is #3 in both the sales and download charts but as we know singles sales are miniscule.
Does this indicate people who bought it are older and it did less well in the Main Chart because of lack of streams? It has failed to make the Streaming Top 100. Looks that way. Early days though.
Sales were 10,000. So that very small amount is enough for Top 3 in Sales Chart and #30 in Main Chart.

Who pays for downloads anymore? I did it a few times but not for about 10 years (I think Agnetha’s 2013 single was the last time I did). When you can listen for free on YouTube, and rip it from there, why would you pay for a digital file? Physical sales I can understand (like ABBA’s Voyage singles. Nothing but souvenirs really) but not digital ones.

Quote: When you can listen for free on YouTube, and rip it from there, why would you pay for a digital file? *From Napster alll the way up to legal streaming, the internet really has wrecked music. People have been conditioned to expect music for free, no matter how much it costs the artist to produce it, whether they're massive stars or unsigned nobodies. Unless an act has a sizeable following, it's killed the physical release too. I really like the French entry this year too. A strutting dance number with a lot of sass in the delivery. A lot of the entries seem to be no-nonsense dance numbers this year. I started off with some hopes for the Irish entry this year, but it really pales beside the other songs. * sorry - editing a quote seems to make it unusable.

Alan, your assumption is right, no physical single for the UK eurovision song.
Like you I fail to see why anyone would buy a download when you get streaming..Infact, looking back I can't see why I ever bought downloads. I got the two ABBA Voyage singles on CD, like you just as collector's items.
I also agree with comments about people expecting music for free - or a monthly free for ad free streaming. It really must be hard on artists especially those without a big following. You can understand gigs being so expensive. Musicians need to makw a living.
PS: Mae Mullen has dropped from 24 to 55 in the Update Chart. So last week #24 on Monday's Update before ending up at #30 on the Final chart on Friday. So expect lower than 55 by Friday.

Full circle ?
If the odds are to be believed, and fickle fate deals its hand, Then Sweden is red hot Favourite to win ESC..
So that would mean the ESC 2024 would be held in Sweden.. exactly 50 years after a little known group that we all now love won, wouldn’t that be a great coincidence..
Hey, we could speculate forever and a day on a ABBA appearance in the final... now that would be a fitting finale.....

It would be nice if 2024 ESC contest was in Sweden...until you realise that means Loreen winning. She doesn't deserve to win with her karaoke version of Euphoria.
Whoever wins, let's hope it's because it is judged as a song, so ruling out sympathy vote for Ukraine too. If that happens again it will make a mockery of the ESC.

UK entry Mae Mullen plummets 30 to 61.
Meanwhile Loreen is #1 in Sweden for the second week.

Gigiola Cinquetti from Italy won 1964 and came 2nd to a little known group in 1974...
With just under a week to go, Sweden are still favourites with Finland also heavily tipped...
UK should be a top 10....
Dark horses.... France.....

Perhaps it's because I don't listen to ESC songs - the favourites and winners - with enough attention and frequency, but I find them generally inferior in terms of tunefulness and overall pop musicality compared with what I regard as the best hits of any era. Just my opinion, but shouldn't there be more memorable songs in such a contest? Or maybe you think there are?
Mind you, my two favourite decades for pop are the 60s and 70s, so that kinks my view!
As for Sweden's entry and favourite for this year, i don't go much on it - and Finland's second favourite, even less.

Watched the first semi final for my sins..lol
it was very predictable, 10/15 acts go through rest go home, to say there were some dreadful choices is an understatement, personally only about 6 deserved to go through, but hey it's all about the " show" theses days and a full on entertainment show for 3 minutes with sometimes the song coming secondary...
Of course the favourites got through, and trying to keep tension going until last act announced which was Norway..
So big favourites Sweden, Finland Israel and Norway easily make it a few more obscure like Moldova which ironically is quite catchy... a couple of weird from Croatia and Serbia and a few forgettable..
Personally a pleasant surprise was Portugal...
Ireland went home yet agin, they just cant qualify 5 years now...
Onto Thursdays next batch....

I won't be getting that part of my life back...I'd rather have watched I'm A Celebrity..lol
It was really a very poor 2nd Semi Final, with not one act standing out, or in with a chance to win, even Austria, a fan favourite seemed a bit dull, ( who opens the final) perhaps it was all the other dirges bringing it down, all in all not good watching. That aside I enjoyed , a brief highlight , Poland, but even that was a yesteryear throwback.
The draw for the final has been made, and most of the " good " songs are in the first half... so plenty of opportunities to make a cuppa tea, drink another bottle of wine...
I think , it's going to be between Sweden and Finland come the end, UK possibly top 10, ( after last night's clip of showing her live, I'm so sure anymore) , but with overall standard so low, for at least 20 of the 26... unless there's a surprise.. noticed Albania has become popular !!! Lol.. it really is all you can do.. laugh.. God forbid Croatia wins....

I’m a bit out of touch with Eurovision due to lack of interest, but I usually watch the final. I’m surprised that Ukraine isn’t the favourite again. After all, the war is still very much ongoing. Why are people unlikely to show support as they did last year?

Even sufficient amounts of alcohol didn’t help. It’s like watching a series of support acts when you’re waiting for the act you’ve really come to see. Except that, in this, that doesn’t happen.
There was one that sounded very much like Space Man.

No, not again. It is meant to be a song contest What would the point of it be if people voted on political grounds. They’ve been doing that for years though. Neighbouring countries voting for each other etc. It’s one of the reasons the UK has done so badly in recent years as they don’t have any political allies in Europe (and that was well before Brexit). I know the songs weren’t great until last year but didn’t deserve to do as badly as they did. It will be interesting to see how both the UK and Ukraine do. I’m not particularly enamoured by the UK entrant but I hope it doesn’t come last or in the bottom quarter. I’d be happy to see Ukraine do well again. I think it’s gone well beyond a song contest now. The songs themselves are more of a by-product. It’s about how both the acts and the stage look. It’s become such a huge event now. Fewer people care about how good or bad the songs are.
