To my knowledge, ABBA didn't want to be the opening act of any band and never wanted an opening act for their concert... And that they crashed a Björn Skifs concert during rehearsals, which technically doesn't count.
BUT during the middle of ABBA's concert, they would have Tomas Ledin sing his self-penned song, which is kinda strange setlist for a concert, as another artist are typically performing their song before the headliner does so.
But if ABBA, the headliner, or Stig had allowed someone to be the opening act of their concert, following the traditional rock concert format a la Bill Graham, who would it be and why?

I guess they would choose some fellow Swedish star (preferably a Polar act) to promote him/her abroad - how about Ted Gärdestad? He was close to the ABBA members, great musician and a likely contender for an international stardom...

Perhaps Gemini or Svenne and Lotta?

Perhaps Gemini or Svenne and Lotta? On the US leg of the '79 tour, it might have been an idea to have a fairly substantial US act as support. An act that would draw publicity in their own right, and that would be famous enough for US folk to say 'hey, ABBA must be a big deal if so-and-so is their support act'. But a pop act, one that would complement ABBA. I checked the Billboard charts for 1979 and Sister Sledge seems to fit the bill. What do you reckon Mike?

Just for fun... if ABBA were still touring... Adele, as she is so below them, sadly boring, which would highlight even more ABBAs material... Ps I'll eventually come up with a good answer.... Bananarama, Steps, Brotherhood Of Man, Bucks Fizz, Boney M, The Dooleys ....come to mind..lol

I was thinking about other Swedish artists out of the Polar family and maybe Gyllene Tider or Eva Dahlgren would be the right choice - both promising acts, not yet so famous as to decline being a support act at the time of ABBA's final world tour.

I HATE We Are Family.

It's kind of odd that they never had support acts. Apart from giving the crowd more for their bucks, they also serve to help get the audience in earlier as well as iron out any sound or lighting issues beforehand. I'm not sure how it works out, financially with having support acts. They often have their own records to promote so do they appear at no cost, command a fee or just have their expenses covered?
A contemporary band, Queen, more often than not had a support band, sometimes up to four with their huge outdoor concerts. On their tours, they would often use a act from whatever country they were in. So they would have Status Quo in the UK and Cheap Trick in the USA. At other times, one band would be part of the tour over multiple countries.

ABBA with Sister Sledge isn’t bad... But I do agree that Ted Gärdestad would have been a safer bet in mainland Europe. had they toured in 1975 around the USA or UK without lip syncing and being on TV, they’d have one of the Chinnichap musicians (in the USA) going as opening act before them to get the glam sizzling.

Yeah like Sister Sledge as support or Yvonne Elliman for the USA and Canada. For Europe considering which bands were around at the time....the Dooleys , Darts or Racey. Or Candi Statton. Or Tina Charles. All had at least two hits under their belt.
