I was sad to learn today that another legend of popular music has passed away. When I was growing up, Glen occupied a similar position to John Denver in my Dad's record collection and thus my own musical education and orientation. For me at that time, both of them were too country, too easy listening, and even too old (in the mid 1970s!) to be cool. However, their quality songs have bounced around in my head ever since.
Wichita Lineman, like SOS, has been cited as pop music perfection, with timeless existential lyrics and an unusual and complex structure. Written by Jimmy Webb, but unforgettably rendered by Glen Campbell.
Rhinestone Cowboy, like Dancing Queen, seems like a simple song to sing until you try it and realize just how good those vocals are, spanning two octaves in a deceptively gradual journey upwards from verse to chorus.
Glen was a brilliant session guitarist too; the complete package. Gone, but the songs will live on.
