As you all may know, Eurovision 2020 has been cancelled due to the coronavirus.
We can have our own Eurovision 2020 made up from ABBA songs instead.
There will be 3 different sections:-
Semi final 1 and Semi final 2 • Includes album tracks and non-single songs such as A and B sides. • Songs featured on ABBA Gold go straight to the final so are excluded from the semi finals. • Excludes international versions of songs, alternate versions, live performances and unreleased songs. • This should total 40 songs for each semi final. • Message me your 3 favourite songs from each semi final. These are given 1 point each. • The top 10 songs with the most points go to the final.
Final • ABBA Gold songs • Top 10 songs from each semi final • Again, this should total 40 songs • Rank the ABBA songs in the 8-10-12 points format down below
1 point - 2 points - 3 points - 4 points - 5 points - 6 points - 7 points - 8 points - 10 points -
12 points -
• Message me your votes so I can keep a score of the points. • I shall then post the results.
Thank you orf for giving me feedback. Do you think this is fair enough?

The way to do this would be for all of us to nominate fifty songs and send them to you via private message. You then select the twenty-five most popular choices and those are the songs that 'go through' into 'The Final'. Then we each award our 1 through to 12 point scores. Obviously the choices should only come from the original studio albums and/or single A sides; that adds up to a good number for us to do the first thinning-out process. Gracias Por La Musica and the live album are to be excluded from consideration; it would make no sense to have the English language version of Fernando up against the Spanish language version of the same song, or a live version of something up against the definitive studio version. No single 'B' sides. There might need to be one or two other stipulations that I can't think of right now.
Rethink: how about using the top fifty songs from the 2016 Megarate, we put those in personal preference order and submit the list to you. Here they are:
01. Dancing Queen 02. Knowing Me, Knowing You 03. The Name of the Game 04. SOS 05. Take a Chance on Me 06. One of Us 07. Like an Angel Passing Through My Room 08. Fernando 09. The Winner Takes It All 09. Summer Night City 11. Eagle 12. Lay All Your Love on Me 13. The Visitors 14. When All is Said and Done 15. Mamma Mia 15. When I Kissed the Teacher 17. Money, Money, Money 18. If It Wasn't For the Nights 18. One Man, One Woman 20. Soldiers 21. Chiquitita 22. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) 22. My Love, My Life 22. I've Been Waiting For You 22. As Good as New 26. The Day Before You Came 26. Kisses of Fire 28. Slipping Through My Fingers 29. I'm a Marionette 29. Move On 31. Our Last Summer 32. Hole in Your Soul 33. Angeleyes 34. I Let the Music Speak 35. The Piper 36. That's Me 36. Tiger 38. The King Has Lost His Crown 39. Waterloo 39. Voulez-Vous 41. Should I Laugh or Cry 42. Super Trouper 43. Head Over Heels 44. Happy New Year 45. Ring Ring 46. Bang-A-Boomerang 47. I Wonder (Departure) 47. Dance (While the Music Still Goes On) 49. Lovers (Live A Little Longer) 50. Gonna Sing You My Lovesong
Edit: Cassandra and Elaine eliminated, being 'B' sides; Lovers' and Gonna Sing You My Lovesong included instead, as the next two from the old countdown

Gonna Sing You My Lovesong Edit: Cassandra and Elaine as 'B' sides eliminated; Lovers' and Gonna Sing' included as the next two from the old countdown I’ve edited the original post. I’m going to keep the B sides because I think they should have an equal representation as the other songs. Also, what do you think of the ABBA Gold songs going straight to the final because in a way, they are like the “Big Five” countries.

Having suggested all that, I still think it'll be hard to avoid a predicable result. I'm inclined to select the fifty songs to be put up for selection for the final by choosing every other (i.e. every second) song from the old Megarate list, so that we get a bigger range of less typical ABBA songs. Sorry, I'm just causing confusion here, Rubber Ball Man! Maybe I should remove my oar.

Have you had any submissions yet? Sorry RBM, but I have to admit I haven't really got much urge to do this. Despite whatever twists can be added to the selection process, what it will lead to is just another numbered list of ABBA songs at the end of the day.

I haven’t got any submissions yet. It’s okay that anyone hasn’t got the urge to do it. I might try this some place else as there might be a bit more of a positive response to this. Even if it doesn’t work, it is still worth a try.

Nice one for thinking this up, RBM. I'd like to have a crack at it but I'm not great at things like this- I tend to get muddled and post songs from the wrong album and things like that. I've had it pointed out to me before. It's not that I don't know which songs are from which album (I should do after all these years of being a fan) it's just that I make errors and it looks like I'm just hopeless. I think I'm more the "other side of the brain"? I am rubbish at maths - I see it as somehow linked to that.

Ok, well it's still rather unclear to me but I've chosen 3 out of that list. An almost impossible task!
I'm concerned that others aren't bothering, though.

2 people have done this on this forum so far. You and HOMETIME so far. I’m glad that at least you guys are involved in this. More than 10 people on a non-ABBA forum have participated in this so far. I don’t think there’s any need of concern yet.

I'm not inclined to do this if some of the songs from ABBA Gold are getting a bye into the final. No song should have the right to slip through the initial thinning out process (it's going to be a yawner if Dancing Queen or The Taker Wins It All romps home for yet another win).

It’s only the 9 UK No. 1 singles that go into the final instead of the whole of ABBA Gold by the way. Personally, I would like a song other than Dancing Queen to win. Wouldn’t mind if The Winner Takes It wins to be honest.

I guess if Dancing Queen or The Winner Takes It All romps home then it's because they are both fantastic tracks.
Which would you prefer, orf? Oops. Don't answer that!

It’s hard to pick a favourite song when it comes to Abba. But there are times when I favour one over the other. Dancing Queen is such a special song and I can understand it topping poles everywhere. Fernando another. The first Abba song I ever bought. And Knowing me Knowing You just fabulous. I can guess that the top 20 will be dominated by the singles . Maybe after the results are in we can have two charts one with all the all the tracks and one with the singles extracted to see the most popular non Abba singles. Singles should only be those as recognised releases in most territories taking out Eagle, As good as new, on and on an on, when all is said and done and That’s me. I think sometimes DQ suffers from exposure fatigue and that’s why it’s popularity fluctuates amongst fans. But for me it’s not only the best Abba song ever but the best song ever. I love so many other bands and songs but it’s out there on its own.

12 Eagle , 10 The Visitors, 8 Slipping through my fingers, 7 If it wasn’t for the nights, 6 Move on 5 Happy New Year, 4 As Good As New, 3 Kisses of fire,2 The Piper and 1 I’m a marionette. That was so difficult and that’s without the Abba gold tracks to chose from.

Great list but you can only choose 3 of your favourite songs from the semi final list above as well as the other semi final list. You can do the 8-10-12 voting system in the final list. Sorry if there was any confusion.

This is where I get confused (not difficult for me). I thought we were supposed to post our rankings in a private message to The Rubber Ball Man?
Anyway, I'm inclined to agree about Dancing Queen. Despite its omnipresence, this doesn't alter the fact that (in my opinion at least) it really IS the greatest pop song ever. It's eternal. It's the ULTIMATE. Nothing can touch it. Sadly, it means that other ABBA songs don't get quite as much acknowledgement. Knowing Me, Knowing You is a behemoth -incredible vocal, lyrics...everything. One of Us is achingly beautiful and doesn't get nearly the amount of credit it deserves. In many ways, it's ABBA's last hurrah. And what of The Day Before You Came? I could go on...and will. I think the problem is simply down to favourites. If your particular favourite(s) don't make the top spot then it can be tempting to deny the power and worth of those that do. But there's a reason that songs like The Winner Takes It All consistently tops polls and that's because it's bloody brilliant. It moves so many people! People can relate to it. Watch a react video (a good one) and you can see the emotion it elicits in someone- its REAL and relatable. It's churlish to deny this. Same with Dancing Queen. Millions of people aren't wrong. It might not be your cup of tea but that doesn't mean it's lousy. It's like Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm not a huge fan but I can't slate it because I can see it's power and effect. I get why people love it even if I don't.
But how I'd love ABBA's lesser known songs to get an airing/appreciation. I suppose some have, to a degree (Slipping Through My Fingers being a prime example due, I grudgingly concede, to Mamma Mia!).

I feel massively out of sync with, I'm sure, the great majority of ABBA fans, because Dancing Queen, although I acknowledge the marvellous vocals from Agnetha and Frida, is nowhere near as one of my top favourites. I prefer the melodies of lots of other ABBA songs, and the song's overall musical impact on me is far less than it obviously is for most. Having said that about the eventual winner or second place (😀), here are my three: SOS Angeleyes The Visitors
I could, of course, have chosen a number of other ABBA top threes, but these three appeal most right now. The Visitors would probably be a constant for me.

Richard. It isn't just the sound of Agnetha and Frida singing together on Dancing Queen that makes it exceptional. It's the melody. Surely you've heard how Frida started to cry the first time she heard it because it was "so beautiful"? I agree with her. Listen to the orchestral version of the song (Muriel's Wedding)- its astonishing in its simplicity and beauty. Still, I hear you- many, many ABBA songs have exquisite melodies- Angeleyes and Happy New Year being amongst them. I mean. ..we are seriously SPOILED!
Seeing songs like The Visitors and Angeleyes here remind me of how impossible a task it is to choose- I have LOTS of 'favourites'.

Gary, thanks! (I think 😊 ). I realised my embarrassing second mistake soon after I posted it - and conveniently put it aside - 'till tomorrow'. Anyway, here is my settled and final three from the first semi-final list:
SOS I've Been Waiting For You One Of Us
Josef, you're right - so many great melodies. But I thought it was the backing track to Dancing Queen that so moved Frida? That in itself, though, tells a lot about the compelling appeal of the song.

This is very difficult as ABBA have such an impressive musical catalogue. So many great songs. Josef, I agree with you in respect of your comments concerning DQ, KMKY and TWTIA as well as other songs. Many are indeed enveloped in beautiful melodies. Each song is uniquely different. My choice of three from the first semi-final, SOS, Move On and Kisses Of Fire. Phew, as I have already said, a tough one. Thank you to Rubber Ball Man for devising the poll.

I did plan to put both semi final lists out at the same time but I couldn’t find the time to be honest. But here it is now. The first semi final list is still open if you haven’t voted for that as well.
Choose 3 songs from the 2nd semi final list
