But still together and doing the circuit. The strange thing about them was they were British writing in their English yet none of their songs matched the quality of Bjorn’s lyrics. The titles Papa Louis , Taxi , Highwayman are just some. A few attempts at their version of Abba songs....Goodbye Goodbye(KMKY) Lightning Flash (Super Trouper) and Angelo (Fernando). They were not alone Boney m gave us El lute their version of Fernando. But BOM just couldn’t up their game enough to be serious competition for Abba from lyrics to production. They still make me smile though.

madonnabba, your comment reminded me of an amusing video on YouTube about the two groups that supports your remarks. If you haven't seen it, just type in: abba brotherhood

I have enjoyed seeing BOM on a few occasions at concerts and have found them thoroughly entertaining.
I don't try to compare them to ABBA. ABBA's studio craft was in a different league, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the BOM songs.

Bless 'em, one of them even had a perm more terrible than Frida's! They even did face to face and side-on shots when singing.
They were/are harmless, you couldn't dislike them. But they were no match for ABBA.
I gather they precede ABBA by a few years? But I bet the line-up changed, not to mention their sound. There's no denying they copied ABBA.

I gather they precede ABBA by a few years? But I bet the line-up changed, not to mention their sound. There's no denying they copied ABBA. Had a hit in 1970 with “United We Stand” but this was a completely different line-up (there are six former members but I don’t know how many of them were in it at once). They were dropped by the record company and split, but the people behind the group wanted to keep the name alive, so by early 1974 the (then all-new) familiar line-up was in place. The two-boy, two-girl line-up similarity with ABBA was therefore a coincidence as it was before ABBA’s Eurovision win. Difficult to take seriously but harmless, as has been said. As with Bucks Fizz, Steps and others, they don’t really earn the right to be spoken in the same breath as ABBA. There’s a new Brotherhood of Man “Gold” album out (seriously). And it’s three discs long. Only trouble is, it’s mostly their versions of other people’s hits, including at least two of ABBA’s.

It seems pretty obvious that BOM were out to emulate ABBA. Angelo and Figaro are prime exhibits for the prosecution, m'lord. Oh Boy (The Mood I'm In) came close too. But they soon drifted into cabaret territory and that Gold compilation is just chock full of those lazy covers. I know that Bucks Fizz are often namechecked in the ABBA-wannabe chats, but apart from the 2-boy/2-girl line-up and the Eurovision connection, there's little to be made of the alleged comparison. Their material was miles ahead of BOM's, and was covered by the likes of Cher, Barry Manilow, The Four Seasons, Celine Dion and some Swedish singer - Agnetha Faltskog? Anyone ever heard of her??

Agnetha as a singer can, of course, wipe the floor with Bucks Fizz, but somehow the production of their version is better. I heard their version first (which in itself made it hard for her to follow) but Agnetha’s (mock-reggae?) rendition just sounds a bit flat. I’d probably say the same about Cher and Heart of Stone. Better singer but not such a good production.
