Here's an interesting project that I just stumbled across. At first sight it seems gimmicky, but they are very good musicians and have put a lot of thought and effort into it. My initial impressions are that some of the songs appear to adapt very readily to a jazz treatment (IDX5, LAYLOM especially the chorus, GGG, MMM), while others seem awkwardly resistant (HOH, IHAD, DQ). I like the ones in between, the arrangements that they have had to sweat over but which offer a fresh perspective. The disco challenge of VV has been approached by using French as a jazzificatalyst. Currently my favourite is SNC.

Thoughts? Which ones work for you and which don't?

First impressions are that IDX5 works very well and also Waterloo. Strangely enough, Lay All your Love On Me works quite well too. Thank You For The Music made me think of the Carpenters version and also Agnetha's Doris Day version. Summer Night City lends itself very well. I got a bit bored during Waterloo. Voulez Vous I like a lot.
Hearing these, I can just imagine Frida sitting on a stool on The Jools Holland Show singing a selection of ABBA songs in this manner, à la the black and white footage of her singing on Swedish television in the 1960's. It would go down a storm, I tell ya!
I thnk many ABBA songs suffer from over-familiarity. Listening to them re-imagined like this I get a nenewed appreciation for just how damn good those songs are.

Here are my two Swedish kronor (in order, haven't listened to them all yet):
IDx5: as mentioned, ideally suited for this treatment.
I Have A Dream: as anodyne as the original: no treatment will ever save it!
Waterloo: No no no.
LAYLOM: No. This is one that should never be covered, by anybody, because it's holy to me.
HOH: surprisingly good, but then the original was always underestimated.
DQ: No no no.
Now, I really like the Thank You For The Music version, it sounds like the timeless standard it was born to be (even though Benny claims to have written it on a toy piano during some party). Ella should have done it!

I dont know. It was interesting, but, somehow it seemed to me like "why bother" when the arrangement is so far away from the original, and possibly the entire song structure... altho I cant be sure because SOS was the only Abba song I ever learned.
anyway, when I hear something like that, I wonder, why not just write your own lyrics? Then it becomes your own song... you've already done all the other work!
the other thing is, the jazz club trio and vocalist is pretty limiting in sonic scope. So to a point, unless you really really dig that Diana Krall sound, it gets old pretty quickly.
but overall a good recording and mix, vocal was a bit overpowering, I would have turned up the piano... but a good effort and interesting project.
