I am not expecting to hear Hit By a Train or any other unfinished/unreleased Voyage song either.
I have no idea why Benny blurted out about two unfinished songs.Saying they were quite good and needed to be "fixed" could, logically, imply they weren't used in other songs. But then we are talking about Benny and they have never been released, or likely to be.
If they do get released it would be a box set type of thing not 2 CD compilation.

At the time, when I heard Benny talk about two more Voyage songs, I was rather optimistic that they would be released. Why else label them as "quite good" and state that they only needed more finetuning by Benny himself in the studio. I was expecting them to be released on a special (deluxe) reissue of Voyage, perhaps around the time of the Voyage concert's premiere. But that ship has sailed. The momentum has come and gone.

One other thing I’ve heard confirmed: Carl Magnus Palm has said he was involved in choosing the track listing, and that No Doubt About It was only included as it’s the only thing that fitted with 2022. Here's the info on his website: carlmagnuspalm.com/abba/compilations-and-box-sets/the-singles--the-first-fifty-yearsI wonder if he could eventually be convinced to spill some beans on the other variants proposed, and who was responsible for nixing them? I presume he's well enough connected to the fan community to know how poorly this release is being received? But would he actually convey that back to his contacts? If there are other editions in the pipeline - coloured vinyl, pic discs, etc. - they deserve to be nervous about announcing them. The more I think about this album, the more it boils my wee. [Following on from HOMETIME ’s comment about Happy Hawaii and Dream World]…And also Get On The Carousel, which, though never released in audio form, is prominent in ABBA The Movie. There's also the Sombrero/Cassandra connection - which might mesh quite well with johnny's theory. Both tracks were released.

Agreed, HOMETIME. Would be curious to know if one of the rejected tracklists happened to include a certain "Hit By A Train" and "My Story Ends With You"...

“I advised a bit on the track list” - that’s hilarious - even CMP is distancing himself from it! Not much to advise on - consult the Wikipedia or Discogs entries on The Definitive/Essential Collection, remove some tracks and add Voyage ones (and Hasta Mañana).

I'm not even slightly interested in this. The only compilation of ABBA's I've ever bought (outside the three compilation albums released as part of their official output as an active group) is More Gold, in '93, because I was curious to hear an unreleased song. I bought the anthology boxset in 1994 for the same reason. I didn't need to get Gold in 1992, as I already had everything on it at the time, and I already had duplicates of their biggest hits via the greatest hits albums and the original albums. Colour me economical or penny-pinching if you want, I don't care.
Since we're mentioning unreleased songs from the Voyage sessions in this thread, I'd be very surprised if "Hit By a Train" and the other mystery Voyage song, or parts of these two songs, hadn't already been recycled, modified or incorporated into some of the tracks on the new BAO album.

Perhaps Benny meant to say: "These two unreleased Voyage songs are quite good to be used in BAO" !

jj, I could have written exactly the same post. More Gold and the 1994 anthology are the only compilations I’ve bought post-1982. I have never fallen into the ABBA collector trap. I’ve fallen into other collector traps though!

Maybe a couple of hundred for the mega expensive vinyl set and low thousands for the CD version on week 1 then disappear.

To be fair, without anything new on it, it never was going to do well. The Definitive Collection didn’t do all that well, but it did at least have the extended version of Voulez-Vous on it (which wasn’t previously available). Though if you haven’t heard it, you’re really not missing anything. The Essential Collection didn’t do well at all, and, like The Singles 50, has nothing new to offer. Do we we think around number 30 for a week and then straight out, or is even that being over-optimistic?

This will be the first compilation in the Streaming Era, so it could benefit from that, giving it a Top 10 entry. GOLD would drop out of the charts - unless Universal nominates it as the compilation for chart eligibility.
If just basis on its sales, #30, or even lower and one week in the chart looks about right.

You can tell how much of an anti-climax this compilation is when there are no Youtube uploads from Bobbysbrother or ABBADiego, who are usually mega-excited about any ABBA-related releases (they'll probably upload videos today just to make me look stupid 😜).

Not much to advise on - consult the Wikipedia or Discogs entries on The Definitive/Essential Collection, remove some tracks and add Voyage ones (and Hasta Mañana). In terms of "advising" on the tracklist, I wonder if his contributions are among those rejected? Like you say, this bald tracklist needs bugger all research. The fans who are ready to shell out for this album should do some shopping around. This morning, the UK Amazon site has the vinyl for €134 (plus delivery), the fanclub shop has it for €108 (again, delivery is extra - and in my experience, ferociously expensive), the German Amazon site has it for €88.15 - with delivery at €5.06. A lot of eager buyers could get burned by pressing "buy now" on the first site they visit. With some retailers refusing cancellations on pre-orders, it pays to scan the T&Cs before paying. With Gold being such an affordable, steady seller and with More Gold available for about €7-8 on CD, it's hard to see how TSTFFY can do more than make more than a lightning visit to the album charts. Calling it a "collectors item" is a cynical fig leaf. If it somehow is being released in limited numbers, it'll be interesting to see how the prices will take shape on resale sites like ebay and Discogs.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"
The Definitive Collection part 3.
Look at that tracklist, only 3 songs each from Arrival, The Album, Super Trouper and The Visitors. Yet 4 from Ring Ring and 5 from Voyage - their worst albums (well, Voyage maybe 3rd from bottom). This distribution is terrible. Oh, let's have Love Isn't Easy because it reached the dizzy heights of #21...in Denmark.

What If......
Gold is pulled and Universal decide that from now on that "50" is going to be the nominated album, and will be the definitive album.....I guess it's not impossible....
Abba stream on average around 5 million a week, I'm guessing here, but with those numbers a album of some sort is always going to chart.
There has been at my last look, around 14 compilations that have charted in the U.K. , with numerous others not charting, you could argue of those 14 less than a handful are really needed, GH1 for instance stands on its Own, GH2 and Singles, and of course Gold..legitimate... others , more dubious... it's alas just a cash cow for the company, ( but hey it's a business, up to the individual who buys... they do say " a fool and his money is soon parted" ). There may be, but how many more acts have had 14 GH released in various formats....
Personally I hope they stick to Gold and leave it be, the charts are a farce at the best of times, but hey while it's in its present format it's keeping ABBA alive in the album charts...

I hope they leave Gold untouched: its record-breaking status makes it an essential part of the legacy. I'm shocked that More Gold has not been tarted up and pimped out on vinyl again.
I scrolled back through my own posts (narcissist alert!) to find something I had posted much earlier when we were all spitballing our ideas for an anniversary release. Looking at it again, I think it should have looked like the following. Horrifyingly, it ran to six LPs - so would be even more ridiculously expensive than the current offering. But this is what I would have pitched at a meeting, if I'd been invited, based on what I'm sure is in the vaults:
LP#1: People need love / Ring, ring / Honey, honey (Eng-Swe) / I do, I do, I do, I do, I do – extra verse / SOS / Mamma mia // Dancing queen / Money, Money, Money / The name of the game / Take a chance on me / Eagle - edit
LP#2: Chiquitita / Does your mother know? – Switzerland version / Angeleyes / Voulez-vous / I have a dream (Spanish 3rd verse) // If It Wasn't For The Nights - withdrawn single edit / The winner takes it all / Lay all your love on me / One of us / When all is said and done - from Voyage
LP#3: The visitors - from Voyage / Head over heels / The day before you came / Under attack // I still have faith in you / Don’t shut me down / Just A Notion / Little things / Hit by a train
LP#4: My story ends with you / Just like that 2024 / The visitors - Tretow remix // Lay all your love on me - Tretow remix / On and on and on - Tretow remix / Take a chance on me - Tretow remix
LP#5 - LIVE 1977: Fernando / Waterloo / So long / I am an A // THE GIRL WITH THE GOLDEN HAIR: Thank you for the music / I wonder (departure) / I’m a marionette / Get on the carousel
LP#6 - LIVE 1981: Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! / Super trouper / Two for the price of one / Slipping through my fingers / Me and I // On and on and on / Knowing me, knowing you / Summer night city / Thank you for the music

HOMETIME, now that is a compilation I would pay money for! I'd add a couple of alternative versions or 'cold endings' to a couple of the tracks to mix it up a bit, and swap the usual Little Things for the extended video version, but apart from that, I'm sold!

It’s odd how they emphasis that it’s Polar releases that they are including here, if they had just titled it differently (though another compilation is pointless.) but if a compilation is a necessity, then retitle it ‘first 50 years’ then just have free reign over what is included. Any album which sacrifices TYFTM for Love Isn’t Easy, I can’t fathom that, a terrible song I can’t bear listening to. I think TYFTM is on too many albums anyway, but including Love Isn’t Easy is just too odd. Include the Spanish version GPLM, and kick off Love Isn’t Easy and So Long. Include WIKTT for its prominence in MM2, delete LT, include The Visitors. Being too heavily reliant on Polar singles has not done the release any favours. WYDWM is the hit that never was instead of JAN. even have a vote through the official fan club etc.

Plausible thoughts on the two Voyage outtakes and the new BAO album. I'd find that rather sad though. As much as I enjoy BAO, I'd easily give away their new album for the 2 unreleased Voyage songs, sorry. I'd still hope or maybe dream they will get released some time in some way some time. Surely not this year though. The Popjustice posts you copied here speak of a couple more unfinished songs during the Voyage recordings. And surely Benny has written more that hasn't even made it to the Voyage sessions. I'd say it's a rather safe bet that these got recycled into the new BAO album (like Crush On You on BAO 3), which makes it kind of interesting as a showcase for potential outtakes. It could be the case for "Lagt kort ligger" maybe. It sounds like it's actually trying to be a pop, if not an ABBA song with the harmonies, and it's got some funky synths reminiscent of Don't Shut Me Down (particularily audible in the Atmos Mix). The low background "lagt kort liggeeeeer" would suit Frida perfectly. Then, it probably isn't either Hit By A Train or My Story Ends With You. The title metrics don't fit and it doesn't match the description of Hit By A Train by Little Boots ("dark, beautiful, very ABBA"). It's rather bright and bubbly.

Amazon Chart latest...
CD version at #21. It was #1 a few days ago. The vinyl version not in TOP 100. Voyage at #90 for a bargain £3.24
In Hot New Releases chart, CD Version at #9 and Vinyl version at #62.
It looks like pre-sales within first day or two. I would have though more people would order online of only because few record shops now.

I really hope they don’t switch the album that streams are based on from Gold to this. This album deserves to fail.
Just a thought about prices - everything is going up in price and this is probably because so few people buy them. I’m not just talking vinyl and CDs but everything. They still have to make a profit to survive, and they know some people will still buy these things regardless, so they’ll fleece them. And to be fair, if you buy something like this when there’s nothing new on it, it’s your choice and you’re aware it’s overpriced. You deserve to be fleeced (and likely can afford to be).

What If...... Gold is pulled and Universal decide that from now on that "50" is going to be the nominated album, and will be the definitive album.....I guess it's not impossible.... I doubt whether 'Gold' will be pulled for good.... Universal may very well 'deflect' the streaming Chart sales over to '50' for a while, though. Benny, however, has been supervising the Dolby Atmos upgrade of 'Gold' during 2024, and that project should be finished before year-end. There is bound to be some fanfare about that.
