Every Friday The B.P.I., (British Phonographic Industry), gives out UK Music Sales Awards.
A)... Last Friday - 7th December - it gave a Silver Award to 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)'.
That was for 200,000+ UK Download Sales, since they began adding Downloads to the UK Charts - November 2004.
Really, a Single - or Album - is only supposed to get a Sales Award, if it was never given one in past Decades. As 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!' was given a Silver Award in 1979, it was not entitled to one for Downloads! (In 1979 a Silver Single had to sell 250,000+). So how has it managed to get a 2nd Silver Disk now? Answer - The B.P.I. Computer gives the 1979 Vinyl version a slightly different Title. The 1979 Hit is being called 'Gimme Gimme Gimme'. The 2004 to 2018 Download is being called 'Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight). The B.P.I Computer thinks that they are 2 different ABBA Singles!
Will The B.P.I. take back the 2nd Silver Disk, if they realise? No! Once they give a Sales Award they never take it back.
'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!' was the UK's 28th Best Selling Single for 1979. With its current 200,000 Download Sales added in, it would have been about 19th for the Year - 3 places lower than 'Chiquitita'.
B)... Today - Friday 14th December - The B.P.I. has given 'Waterloo' a Silver Disk, for 200,000+ UK Download Sales since November 2004.
'Waterloo' has been allowed to have that Silver Award because it never got a Silver Award for its 1974 Sales. It should have been given one in 1974. It was even announced in 'Music Week', that it was getting it. But the Award was never given. The B.P.I. forgot to give it one. The only 'Waterloo', that got a UK Silver Award in 1974, was the 'Waterloo' Album. That was for 60,000+ UK Sales. At the time a Silver Single had to reach 250,000 and a Silver Album had to reach 60,000.
'Waterloo' was the UK's 16th Best Selling Single of 1974. With its current 200,000+ Download Sales added in, it would have been the 5th Best Seller for that Year...

The lack of logic at the BPI knows no bounds!
Colin - For years, The Winner Takes It All didn’t have any sales awards at all, even though it should have had a silver disc and a gold disc. Did it ever get any sales awards?

Gary -- 'The Winner Takes It All' finally got a UK Sales Award on Friday 13th April - this Year. It was nothing to do with its 1980 UK Sales. It was purely for 200,000+ Downloads since Sunday 14th November 2004. That is when The OCC began to count UK Downloads towards the Chart. So, it got a UK Silver Award on that Date. That is on top of 545,000 to 565,000 UK Sales in 1980. It never got its Silver, (250,000+), and Gold, (500,000+), Awards in 1980. That is why The B.P.I. has allowed it to go Silver with its 200,000+ Download Sales. (Just as Silver is 200,000+ now, Gold has also been made easir to get - 400,000+. Platinum used to be 1,000,000, (for a UK Single), and now it is 600,000).
'Dancing Queen' has also sold over 200,000+ UK Downloads, since 14th November 2004. However, it cannot have a Silver Disk, for them. It already has Silver & Gold UK Sales Awards from 1976...

Just out of curiosity, and for something to post. In the UK, only Dancing Queen has achieved sales of over 1 million, however two songs are not far away Super Trouper approx 978,000 and Knowing Me Knowing You on approx 973,000.. Last totals in 2010 had ST on 815,00 therefore an increase of 163,000, which is approx 18,000 per year.. so sometime next year ?? KMKY .2010. A 128,000 increase.. approx 14,500 a year . 2021 ? Anyone guess/speculate when they will get to that magic one million? Is MM2 having any real effect.. or all so unknown.. it could be 2050 .... as Gold is still selling well if you can call on average 2500 units a week well, but hey still in the UK top 40 weekly best sellers, just spent its 100th consecutive week !!!on it.. does that have any bearing on single sales? over to Colin I guess ?

They are both so close to the million! Maybe when Mamma Mia 2 is televised on BBC 1 or Itv and the release of the new song later in the year , will be enough to generate more interest and push them over the million mark. Thought Fernando would be closer to the million after Mamma Mia 2.

I think that the constant UK Sales of 'ABBA Gold', (over 2,000 every Week), do stop people from Downloading their Singles. However, a great many people listen to them on Streaming services and The Official Charts Company converts them into Sales. So, ABBA Singles are still getting UK Sales added to them.
'ABBA Gold' is fast approaching 5,600,000 UK Sales. It is really on about 5,800,000, but The OCC have 'lost' around 200,000 of its Sales! (That is nothing, 'Legend' by Bob Marley & The Wailers has 'lost' around 800,000 of its UK Sales, since 1984! The OCC give it well over 3,000,000 UK Sales, but it is really on well over 4,000.000 UK Sales).
So far, in 2019, 'ABBA Gold' has sold 53,000 UK copies, and it is the 31st Best Seller of the Year. It should reach 90,000 to 100,000 UK Sales by the end of December...
